WHY:

Many people I meet ask why I became involved with the Irlen Method. It is because I have seen the impact that this non-invasive, low technology method can make in peoples lives. One student I worked with was a sixth grader. He was reading at a first grade level when we began testing. After the correct color of overlay was selected, he read at a seventh grade level. He decoded the word "revolutionary" from a book he selected. At the beginning of testing he struggled with the words "has", "goes" and "corner".

The Irlen Method has been used for over 25 years to identify and help people with a type of processing problem called Irlen Syndrome. Irlen Syndrome is not an optical problem. It is a problem with the brain's ability to process visual information.

BENEFITS OF THE IRLEN METHOD

REDUCE OR ELIMINATE HEADACHES
INCREASE TIME ON TASK
IMPROVE GRADES
REDUCE INDOOR LIGHT SENSITIVITY
LEARN HOW TO MODIFY ENVIRONMENT
REDUCE ANXIETY
REDUCE GLARE ON THE COMPUTER
MAY QUALIFY STUDENTS FOR A 504 PLAN

This problem tends to run in families and is not currently identified by other standardized educational or medical tests. People with SSS have difficulty processing full spectrum light efficiently. The Irlen Method is non-invasive technology that uses colored overlays and filters to improve the brain's ability to process visual information. It is the only method scientifically proven to successfully correct the processing problems associated with Irlen Syndrome. Irlen Syndrome is not a vision or medical condition. Many individuals with Irlen Syndrome pass the vision exam and school vision screenings but still have difficulty with academics. It is important to rule our medical/vision problems before scheduling an appointment.

This technology can improve reading fluency, comfort, comprehension, attention, and concentration while reducing light sensitivity. This is not a method of reading instruction. It is a color-based technology that filters out offensive light waves, so the brain can accurately process visual information.

Individuals are indentified using comprehensive screening protocols. Once identified  colored overlays/spectralfilters are used to help with print distortions, headaches, visual dyslexia, ADHD, autism, lighting or glare.
